Vicksburg to rename street in honor of educator
VICKSBURG, Miss. (AP) — Marcus Street in Vicksburg is being renamed.
The Board of Mayor and Aldermen this week passed a resolution to rename the street for former Vicksburg Warren Superintendent of Schools and Rosa A. Temple principal James E. Stirgus Sr.
The Vicksburg Post reports no date for the renaming ceremony has been set. It’s pending approval of the name change by the county’s 911 committee.
Mayor George Flaggs Jr. says Stirgus should have been recognized a long time ago because of the impact he’s had on so many people’s lives.
Stirgus spent nearly 35 years as a teacher, principal, superintendent and doing various other jobs in Warren County’s education system.
The board in January renamed the City Hall Annex after former Vicksburg Mayor Robert Major Walker.
