Collins Joins NBC As Commentator

March 18, 1998

CHICAGO (AP) _ Doug Collins, fired last month as coach of the Detroit Pistons coach, will join Bob Costas and Isiah Thomas on NBC’s top announcing team for NBA games.

Collins said he was talking with Turner Sports, with whom he had been an NBA analyst for six years before accepting the coaching job with the Pistons. But when those talks hit a snag, he said he had his agent contact NBC.

``Doug is the best NBA analyst ever,″ NBC Sports president Dick Ebersol said Tuesday. ``With the addition of Doug’s television experience and skill this could be the best NBA announcing team in television sports history.

Before joining Turner Sports, Collins was fired after three seasons as coach of the Chicago Bulls.

Collins said he was ecstatic about returning to the broadcast both. He said his contract with NBC has a no-out clause.

``This is not a stop-gap until the next coaching job comes along,″ he said. ``I’m ready to make TV my career.″

Collins will make his NBC debut on March 29 for the Indiana-San Antonio game.
