LONDON (AP) _ Buckingham Palace said Sunday it will study a report that suggests eliminating the monarch’s political and religious role, but said changes to the present system are a matter for Parliament.
The report by the left-wing think tank, Demos, does not call for abolition of the monarchy, but it does suggest a public referendum on the role of the next monarch. That could open the way for people to vote in favor of Britain becoming a republic, Demos said.
``The Demos report is another contribution to the general constitutional debate″ around the monarchy, said a Buckingham Palace spokeswoman who spoke on condition of anonymity. She said Parliament would have to approve any reforms.
The monarch’s present role is largely symbolic.
