WHAT’S AT STAKE
Marshall already has qualified for the Dec. 6 conference championship game. That gives the Thundering Herd two chances to further impress the College Football Playoff committee before it picks a team from outside the five major conferences for a guaranteed spot in the New Year’s bowls. Marshall is one place behind Boise State (No. 23 CFP). Western Kentucky is looking to solidify its resume for a possible bowl bid.
Western Kentucky QB Brandon Doughty vs. Marshall’s secondary. Doughty needs 147 yards to become the Hilltoppers’ first 4,000-yard passer. The senior leads the Bowl Subdivision with 36 touchdown passes. Marshall hasn’t allowed a TD pass in 14 quarters.
PLAYERS TO WATCH
Western Kentucky: RB Leon Allen has filled in nicely for Antonio Andrews, who set single-season rushing records in each of the past two seasons. Allen, a junior, had a conference-record 345 rushing yards against Army on Nov. 15. He has 1,253 yards and 11 rushing TDs this year.
Marshall: RB Devon Johnson. Nicknamed Rockhead, the junior has rushed for 642 yards in his last three games and is at 1,573 for the season. Chris Parker holds the single-season Marshall record with 1,833 yards in 1995.

The teams last met in 1996, when Marshall was in its final season in the former Division I-AA and won the national championship when Randy Moss was a freshman. ...
