Brussels University Dean Charged With Murder Of Wife

May 4, 1991

BRUSSELS, Belgium (AP) _ The dean of Brussels University has been charged with the murder of his wife, a spokesman for the Brussels prosecutor said Saturday.

Jean Renneboog, 51, was arrested Friday, the spokesman said. Renneboog denied killing his wife Claire, 49, who died April 10 when their car crashed and caught fire, police said.

Renneboog claimed he was holding a lighter that fell and ignited an inflammable liquid when the crash took place, police said.

Investigators have found the case suspicious, especially since Renneboog does not smoke.

Detectives searched Renneboog’s home and office at the university, but did not say whether they found any incriminating evidence, the spokesman said.
