Response to column on Alabama abortion ban
The May 20 commentary, “Alabama’s abortion ban not about protecting children” by columnist Mercy Quaye contains several good points, but its tone is misguided.
She describes those who oppose abortion as religious zealots, and the actions of politicians who vote to restrict abortion simply an attempt to gain control over people. She further disparages abortion opponents in Alabama as hypocrites, unfairly using that impoverished state’s many difficulties as the basis of her characterization.
I am not defending the Alabama statute, per se. I am saying that name-calling does not contribute anything positive to the debate over this contentious issue.
