HOUSTON (AP) _ Ralph Stockemer made two 1-yard scoring dives and Tom Muecke threw a 38- yard touchdown pass to Jackie Ball Saturday night as No. 19 Baylor scored 24 unanswered points and held off a Houston rally for a 24-21 Southwest Conference football victory.

The Bears, 4-1 for the season and 2-0 in SWC play, jumped to a 24-7 lead early in the third quarter before Houston quarterback Gerald Landry came back from a first-half injury to rally the Cougars.

Landry, who injured his hamstring early in the second quarter, hit touchdown passes of 18 yards to Anthony Ketchum and 5 yards to Mat Pierson in the third quarter for a 24-21 deficit.

Houston got the early edge when Larry Ball blocked a Baylor punt and David Bearden recovered it in the end zone for a touchdown on a 28-yard play in the first quarter.

The Bears then rallied with 17 unanswered points on Terry Syler’s 25-yard field goal, Muecke’s 38-yarder to Jackie Ball and a 1-yard dive by Stockemer for a 17-7 halftime lead.

Muecke started at quarterback for the Bears but alternated with Cody Carlson, who guided the Bears to Syler’s field goal and Stockemer’s touchdown with 13 seconds left in the half.

Carlson scrambled 23 yards to the Houston 17 and hit Derrick McAdoo for 16 yards to the 1 prior to Stockemer’s touchdown.

On Ball’s touchdown, Muecke threaded a pass between Houston defenders Greg Purcell and Robert Jones on the sideline and Ball went into the end zone untouched.

Baylor extended its lead to 24-7 early in the third quarter on Stockemer’s second 1-yard dive before the Cougars started their comeback.

Houston dropped to 1-3 on the season and 0-1 in SWC play.

Landry’s passing keyed the second-half comeback of Houston. He completed seven straight passes before hitting Ketchum int he end zone behind Baylor defenders Anthony Coleman and Thomas Everett.

Gary McManus recovered a fumble at the Baylor 16 prior to Landry’s TD pass to Pierson, who was completely alone in the end zone following a fake dive into the line by Houston’s Michael Simmons.

Houston got one more shot at victory with 5:44 to play when Randy Thornton batted down a fourth-down pass by Muecke at the Houston goal line before being forced to punt.

Baylor’s Derek Turner recovered a Landry fumble at the Houston 14 prior to Stockemer’s second touchdown leap.

Houston lost linebacker Robert Harper for the game with a knee injury in the second quarter.
