Police investigate fatal Ohkay Owingeh shooting on N.M. 68

January 6, 2019

Ohkay Owingeh police and the FBI were investigating a fatal shooting Saturday afternoon near the Ohkay Hotel Casino on N.M. 68 north of Española.

Frank Fisher, a spokesman for the FBI in Albuquerque, called the death an “apparent homicide.” The victim was a Native American man, Fisher said, and authorities were still searching for a suspect.

New Mexico State Police Officer Dusty Francisco said authorities diverted traffic from both northbound and southbound lanes of the highway near the scene throughout the investigation.

Saturday’s shooting was the second homicide near that location in recent months. In October, 18-year-old Cameron Martinez of Alcalde died on N.M. 68 near the casino when shots were fired at the car in which he was riding.

Police arrested young men they believe to be responsible for Martinez’s death, and at least seven young people are facing charges in relation to that case.
