Woods Quarry in the Snow

January 23, 2019
A side trip off the Mesa Trail just past the McClintock Trail dropping down to Bluebird Road, leads visitors into this lovely snowy canyon, adding only about a half-mile to your outing.

If you go:

Directions: From Table Mesa Drive in Boulder, turn right onto Kohler Drive and continue to Deer Valley Rd. Turn right and when you reach the trailhead, carefully park along the road where Deer Valley Road and Hollyberry Lane meet.

Distance: 3 miles out and back

Difficulty: Easy

Elevation gain: About 700 feet

Dogs: Yes, on leash

Information: Boulder Open Space and Mountain Parks -303-441-3440

Reacting to something I said, my friend and I burst out in a frenzied laughter as we made our way into south Boulder’s Enchanted Forest, on to Kohler Mesa en route to Woods Quarry. The laughter was taken over by comfortable stretches of silence only found in the space of a long friendship.

In this relative quiet, the sun and unseasonably warm January breezes took back the morning.

I’ve been to Woods Quarry dozens of times, but last week I thought I would try the hike from a different trailhead. Typically I start the hike from NCAR, trekking north and west to get to the quarry.

Instead my friend and I started at the Hollyberry Trailhead where Deer Valley Road and Hollyberry Lane meet. This is a less-traveled route.

At the trailhead, after snapping on our traction devices to our hiking boots, we accessed Skunk Canyon heading west. In about a half-mile, take the Kohler Mesa trail to your right along a gentle incline up to the Mesa Trail.

From the Mesa Trail, head south very briefly before reaching the trail to the west that leads to Woods Quarry — you’ll see a stone cabin a bit off the footpath. That’s how you’ll know to take that trail up to your destination.

After resting and enjoying the expansive views from Woods Quarry, return the way you came.
