October 30, 1998

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) _ Brian Shay rushed for 196 yards and two touchdowns as No. 11 Emporia State held off Washburn 35-27 Thursday night in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association.

Shay, the NCAA record-holder in career rushing and all-purpose yards, now has 6,624 rushing yards. He broke Johnny Bailey’s career rushing record last week. Bailey ran for 6,320 yards from 1986-89 at Texas A&I (now Texas A&M-Kingsville).

Emporia State (8-1, 6-1 MIAA) took a 7-0 lead when Gerard Clemons returned the opening kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown.

Washburn (4-5, 3-4) fought back to take a 14-7 lead on an 8-yard TD run by Aaron Battle and a 2-yard run by Brandon Rainer. But the Hornets scored 15 seconds later on a 69-yard run by Shay and went on to lead 28-20 at halftime.

Washburn closed within one when Rainer scored on a 23-yard run in the third quarter, but Trent Fuller closed out the scoring with a 63-yard TD run with 11:18 left.
