Texans at Jets, Browns at Denver...6 bowl games today...Indians trade Alonso to the White Sox
UNDATED (AP) — There are two NFL games today. Houston visits the New York Jets in a late afternoon game and Denver hosts Cleveland in prime time. The 9-4 Texans are closing in on the AFC South crown, with a playoff berth almost certain. Houston also has an outside chance at a first-round playoff bye, but probably needs to win out and get some help. The Jets are 4-9. Cleveland and Denver both have losing records, but still have outside shots at the postseason. The Browns are 5-7-1 and the Broncos are 6-7.
ATLANTA (AP) — A day of college football bowl games kicks off in Atlanta, where North Carolina A&T plays Alcorn State in the Celebration Bowl. NC A&T is playing for its seventh Historically Black Colleges and Universities national title and third in four years. Alcorn State is looking for its sixth national title and first since 2014.
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — Memphis will be playing in the Birmingham Bowl next weekend without All-America running back Darrell Henderson. Henderson tweeted Wednesday that he’s bypassing his senior season to enter the NFL draft, but his post didn’t indicate whether he’d play in the Dec. 22 bowl game against Wake Forest. Memphis coach Mike Norvell has since clarified that Henderson won’t play. Henderson, who averages 8.9 yards per carry, was an Associated Press All-America first-team selection.
CLEVELAND (AP) — The Cleveland Indians have made another offseason move, trading first baseman Yonder Alonso to the Chicago White Sox. In exchange, Cleveland gets 24-year-old outfielder Alex Call, who has yet to make his major league debut. The Indians also got rid of Alonso’s entire $8 million salary for 2019.
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Buffalo Sabres have suspended forward Patrick Berglund indefinitely for failing to report to the team. The Sabres announced the suspension today, hours before facing the defending Stanley Cup champion Washington Capitals. They said there would be no further information or comment at this time. Berglund missed the past two games with what coach Phil Housley called an illness. The 30-year-old Swede has two goals and two assists in 23 games this season.
