KANSAS CITY, Mo. _ A proposal to expand early childhood education across Kansas City is receiving pushback from some school and nonprofit leaders who say increasing the sales tax to fund the idea would be inappropriate. Mayor Sly James is proposing a three-eighths of a cent increase to fund the opening of preschool centers in parts of the city where none exist, making them available to low-income families. James believes too many Kansas City children enter kindergarten academically behind their peers who attended a quality preschool program, and many are unable to catch up, the Kansas City Star reported.


MISSING BOATER-REMAINS IDENTIFIED _ PITTSFIELD, Ill. _ Authorities say DNA analysis has confirmed that human remains found last year along the Mississippi River are those of a western Illinois man who went missing after a boat sank in 2017.

MISSOURI SOUTHERN-RESEARCH LAB _ JOPLIN, Mo. _ The Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences is planning to open a laboratory at Missouri Southern State University in Joplin to provide research opportunities to faculty and students.

A coaching matchup for the ages highlights Sunday’s regional finals in the NCAA Tournament. Duke’s Mike Krzyzewski and Michigan State’s Tom Izzo face off in the East Region. Krzyzewski has 12 Final Four trips and five national titles. Izzo has seven Final Four appearances and a national championship since taking over at Michigan State in 1995. By The Associated Press.

MILWAUKEE _ Christian Yelich of the Milwaukee Brewers extended his season-opening home run streak to four games, tying the major league record for homers in consecutive games to start a season. Yelich also became the first player to win the MVP award and then homer in his first four games of the next season. He hit 36 home runs in 2018.
