Jackson, Miss., Mayor Indicted
JACKSON, Miss. (AP) _ Jackson Mayor Frank Melton, who was elected on a promise to get tough on crime, was indicted Friday by a Hinds County grand jury on felony charges, Sheriff Malcolm McMillin said.
Two Jackson police officers who served as Melton’s bodyguards also were indicted, McMillin said. He said the three were released after posting bond.
The three surrendered to the sheriff’s department before noon Friday, one day after District Attorney Faye Peterson announced a grand jury review of allegations stemming from an altercation last month at a nightclub and the partial destruction of a duplex.
The sheriff did not discuss specifics of the indictment. The district attorney planned a later news conference.
Melton could not immediately be contacted for comment.
