LOS ANGELES (AP) _ Brazilian film and television star Xuxa will star in a Spanish-language version of ``I Love Lucy,'' taking on the title role immortalized by Lucille Ball.

The international version will be based on original ``Lucy'' scripts but will be filmed in Spain and aimed primarily at Spanish-speaking audiences. It also is scheduled to air in Portugal.

In the original show, Ball's character of Lucy Ricardo constantly bedeviled her husband, Cuban bandleader Ricky Ricardo, with her comic escapades. In fits of pique, Ricky would revert to speaking Spanish. In the new version, it will be Xuxa in the Lucy character who will rant in her native Portuguese during tantrums.

The program will be produced by All American/Fremantle International and Spanish broadcaster Antena 3, said Freemantle executive vice president Doug Clark.

Freemantle picked up the international format rights to ``I Love Lucy'' two years ago from CBS, said Clark.
