Vasco da Gama returns to 1st division in Brazil
RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — Four-time national champion Vasco da Gama drew Icasa 1-1 to secure its return to the Brazilian league on Saturday.
The result in front of more than 50,000 fans at Maracana Stadium was enough to seal the team’s promotion with a round left in the second division.
Vasco da Gama was third in the 20-team standings, five points behind Ponte Preta, and seven behind leader Joinville, who had already guaranteed their spot in the top flight.
Five teams are fighting for the final berth — Boa Esporte, Avai, America of Minas Gerais, Atletico Goianiense and Ceara.
Icasa was demoted to the third division with Saturday’s draw. Vila Nova and Portuguesa had already been relegated. Oeste, America of Natal and Bragantino remain in danger.
