TAMPA, Fla. (AP) _ Derek Jeter has tonsillitis, forcing him to miss what would have been his first exhibition game of spring training.

``It's frustrating,'' the New York Yankees shortstop said Saturday. ``I'm finally ready to play with my shoulder and this comes up.''

Yankees manager Joe Torre said Jeter probably will be sidelined a couple of days.

``He wasn't feeling good, but he still wanted to play,'' Torre said. ``We shut him down and sent him home.''

Jeter missed the first eight exhibition games because of an inflamed right shoulder. After full workouts the previous three days, he was to have started Saturday against Philadelphia.

The Yankees are not concerned about Jeter being ready for opening day. Torre said position players require just 10-to-14 days during spring training to get in shape.
