Presidential Candidate Dies in Crash
GUATEMALA CITY (AP) _ A right-wing presidential candidate died Tuesday when his helicopter crashed during a campaign swing through northern Guatemala. Three other people aboard the aircraft also were killed.
Jose Pablo Donado Garcia of the National Liberation Movement was killed when the Bell 204 helicopter he was riding in went down near the village of Comalmapa, 35 miles northeast of the capital.
The helicopter apparently caught fire shortly before crashing, firefighter Mayra Yesenia Monge said.
Donado Garcia, who was running in next year’s presidential race, had been on a campaign tour in northern Guatemala, said a party spokesman, Ulises Dent.
The helicopter was flying from Flores, the main city in Peten province, at the time of the crash, said deputy director of Civil Aviation Julio Godoy Solorzano.
