TAMPA, Fla. (AP) _ Thomas Jones leaped over the pile and scored from about a foot, giving the Tampa Bay Buccaneers a 7-0 lead over the New York Giants early in the second quarter Monday night.

Jones' touchdown capped a 10-play, 43-yard drive for the Bucs, who were helped out by a facemask penalty on third-and-goal from the 3 when quarterback Brad Johnson was wrapped up behind the line.

The touchdown came with 11:21 left in the second quarter.

Neither team could get on track in the scoreless first quarter.

The Giants reached the Bucs' 40 on their second drive, but were thwarted when Kerry Collins muffed a pitch to Tiki Barber and Shelton Quarles recovered the resulting fumble.

The defending Super Bowl champs are playing their first game since deactivating wide receiver Keyshawn Johnson. Coach Jon Gruden believed Johnson, who was unhappy with his role, had become a distraction the team could no longer ignore.

Both teams are 4-6 and may have to win their remaining games to stay in contention for a possible postseason berth.

The Bucs and the Giants, who have lost five of seven after a 2-1 start, have been hampered by inconsistency.
