TORONTO (AP) _ Liquor and beer stores in Ontario will be allowed to conduct business on Sundays starting Dec. 7.
``The people of Ontario have told us what they want,″ Consumer Minister David Tsubouchi said Friday. ``Convenience is important to the majority of people who no longer work 9 to 5, Monday to Friday. It’s just common sense.″
Tsubouchi said Sunday openings would reduce black-market sales while encouraging American customers to shop in Ontario.
Sunday openings in Canada’s most populous province were permitted on a test basis during Christmas holidays in 1995 and 1996, and during a five-week trial in August.
Until now, the only Canadian provinces allowing unrestricted liquor sales on Sundays were Quebec and Alberta.
