Wayne stomps Nitro in 48-12 blowout
The Pioneers used big plays in the passing game early to race to a 27-0 third quarter lead, the ground out the rest en route to a 48-12 victory over host Nitro at Underwood Field.
Gunner Harmon’s threw for 233 yards which helped lead Wayne (2-2) to their second victory of the season.
Wayne (2-2) got off to a quick start. On the third play from scrimmage, Jon Chinn picked off a tipped pass and returned it 40 yards for a touchdown and a 6-0 lead.
As the game progressed, Tanner Owens’ hands complimented Harmon’s air raid. Owens accounted for 156 yards and two touchdowns on the night, including an 87-yard catch and run.
Isaac Dean added an 11-yard scoring grab on fourth down just before halftime, extending Wayne’s lead to 20-0.
The Pioneers dropped the hammer in the third quarter with a 27-0 lead racking up 453 yards of total offense. Owens got behind the secondary in the first play of the second half, pulling in a Harmon pass and taking it 69-yards to the endzone, including a stiff arm at the 10.
Wayne then pounded away the rest of the night and secured the win. Michael Bartram, Chinn and Ethan Bowens all had scoring runs. Nitro’s slow offense only saw the red zone twice, both times coming up empty.
Scott (1-3) fell at home Friday night to border county rival Chapmanville Regional, 48-14.
Connor White accounted for both the Skyhawks touchdowns.
White was forced to improvise in the second quarter moving from tailback to quarterback when starter Michael Clay went down with a broken collarbone.
Wayne got the better of Scott last season in a 38-20 showdown in week five.
Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. at Pioneer Field.
