Earthquake Jolts Pakistan’s Largest City
KARACHI, Pakistan (AP) _ Residents and workers fled their homes and offices Tuesday when an earthquake rattled the country’s largest city, but authorities said there had been no reports of injuries and only slight damage.
The 20-second tremor, which officials said registered 5.4 on the Richter scale, sent many people in the city of 7 million rushing into the streets to seek safety in the open.
The Provincial Assembly suspended its session for 15 minutes when the tremor rattled the building.
The Richter scale is a scale of the energy released by an earthquake, as measured by the ground motion recorded on a seismograph.
A quake of magnitude 4 can cause moderate damage. A quake of magnitude 5, which would be 10 times stronger, can cause considerable damge.
