Jackson St. 79, Alcorn St. 74
BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) _ Jackson State got a big-time performance from forward Tera Sheriff, who had 15 points and 18 rebounds, to defeat Alcorn State, 79-74,, in Saturday’s semifinals of the Southwestern Athletic Conference women’s tournament.
The victory sent Jackson State (21-6) into Sunday’s championship game against Grambling State, which beat Mississippi Valley State, 80-68, in a later semifinal game.
Alcorn State, led by Nickie Tatum’s 17 points, finished the season at 18-8.
Tatum tied the score at 72-72 on a three-point play with 3:12 remaining in the game. Rosalyn Spann’s jump shot then gave Jackson State a 74-72 lead and Aretha Braddo’s subsequent free throw expanded the lead to 75-72 with 26 seconds remaining to clinch the victory.
Alcorn’s Alesha Causey missed two 3-point attempts in the final 11 seconds.
