CAROLINA, Puerto Rico (AP) _ Michael Schmidt had 12 points and 10 rebounds as Niagara snapped a three-game losing streak with a 64-52 victory over Jacksonville in a loser’s bracket game at the Carolina Shootout on Friday.
Tremmell Darden had 15 points for the Purple Eagles (4-6), who never trailed after scoring 13 straight points midway through the first half.
Jacksonville (6-4) got within two points three times after halftime following scores by Calvin Warner, but the Dolphins never got closer.
Warner finished with 25 points and was the only Jacksonville player to score in double figures.
After Warner’s 13-footer got Jacksonville within 35-33, Shey Cohen scored his only basket for Niagara. Warner then made another jumper, but Alvin Cruz responded with a 3-pointer.
Niagara led 44-36 after Cruz made a one-handed floater in the lane. The Purple Eagles then went four minutes without scoring, but Jacksonville managed just six points during that stretch.
Warner’s two free throws made it 44-42 before David Brooks had a layup for his only basket and Schmidt made a 3-pointer for the Purple Eagles.
Juan Mendez had 12 points and Cruz, a freshman and one of two players from Puerto Rico on the Niagara roster, finished with 11.
During the 13-0 run in the first half, six different players scored for Niagara. Darden’s two free throws gave the Purple Eagles a 21-13 lead.
Jacksonville was back within 31-29 before coach Hugh Durham was called for a technical foul with 10 seconds left in the half. Greene made both free throws and Mendez scored inside for a 35-29 halftime lead.
