Wrestling | Cavanaugh, Maxwell Petersen claim individual crowns

Two local wrestlers won titles at prestigious individual tournaments Saturday.

In Fargo, N.D., Byron standout and defending state champion Maxwell Petersen claimed a Rumble on the Red title at 113 pounds.

Petersen topped Northfield’s Jake Messner 11-3 in the finals at 113. He moved to 11-0 this season.

Brother Mitchel Petersen placed third at 126 pounds. Petersen’s lone loss was a 1-0 setback against nationally ranked Kyle Burwick of Hettinger/Scranton (N.D.) Burwick is a Wisconsin commit, and Mitchel Petersen held his one in the close decision. Petersen came back to win the third-place match 10-4 over 20-1 senior Tayt Wolding of New Salem-Almont (N.D.)

Byron was the top local team in the event. The Bears placed 17th with 54.5 points. Perham won the event with 175.5 points, while Apple Valley was second at 159.

Dover-Eyota finished 29th (32 points) and St. Charles claimed 33rd (27 points). Austin tied for 48th place with 10 points.

Michael Nelson was Dover-Eyota’s lone place-winner. He finished fifth at 195. Nelson downed Rowan Morgan of Mounds View 6-0 in the fifth-place match.

At the massive Bi-State Classic in La Crosse, Wis., one local wrestler claimed an individual crown.

Caledonia/Houston’s Kyle Cavanaugh won the title at 145 pounds. He downed Aaron Bahr of West Salem/Bangor (Wis.) in the finals, 4-2.

Caledonia/Houston’s Brandon Ross placed eighth at 106, and Alec Francis was ninth at 285.

Lewiston-Altura/Rushford-Peterson was the top local team in Division 2 (mid-sized schools). LARP scored 122.5 points to finish fifth in Division 2. La Crescent-Hokah was 16th with 57.5 points.

Goodhue was the top local team in Division 3 (small schools). The Wildcats finished third with 164.5 points. Caledonia/Houston was fourth at 132.5, and Zumbrota-Mazeppa fifth with 125.5. Chatfield rounded out the local squads, placing seventh at 91.5.

LARP wrestlers placing in the top nine included Ross Herber (ninth at 120), Gable Speltz (eighth at 132), Noah Herber (seventh at 182).

AJ Karver was Chatfield’s top finisher. He placed sixth at 220.

Clayton Jorgenson led La Crescent-Hokah with a ninth-place finish.

Kelby O’Reilly paced Goodhue, finishing third at 160. Other Goodhue wrestlers to finish inside the top nine included Baxter O’Reilly (eighth at 145), Kaleb O’Reilly (fourth at 170) and Kodee O’Reilly (seventh at 220).

Zumbrota-Mazeppa’s top finisher was Jacob Bennett, who finished second at 195. Bennett dropped a 3-1 decision to Sam Mitchell of Marshfield, Wis., in the finals. Other Z-M wrestlers to place in the top nine included Michael Majerus (seventh at 113) and Tyler Soltau (eighth at 160)
