Golden Girls 14s bring home Northern Nationals title
YANKTON — The Golden Girls 14s capped a successful season by claiming the title at the Northern Nationals 2018 Class C Fastpitch Softball Championships here over the weekend.
The Norfolk squad defeated Parkston, S.D., 8-0 in the championship game on Sunday.
“I am beyond excited and happy for these girls. To be able to travel the short distance from Norfolk to compete at a high level and win makes the hard work worth it,” coach Reid Borgman said. “This team battled all season long, winning our district and finishing fifth at state, and now winning this. I’m very proud, and happy for these girls and their parents, who have supported us all season long.”
The Golden Girls broke a scoreless tie in the third inning when Hannah Renner dropped a bunt down the third base line. A wild throw to first allowed two runs to score, with Renner ended up on third and eventually scoring to put Norfolk up 3-0.
“I was just trying to advance them in the third, but I’m obviously glad they scored and we took the lead,” Renner said.
Renner was back at it in the fourth inning singling and scoring during the four-run inning.
Offensive statistical leaders for the Golden Girls were (Renner 2 runs, 2 RBI) and Ellie Schwede (2 RBI).
Lexi Jensen went the distance on the mound, surrendering seven hits, allow no walks and striking out one over five innings.
