Ex-Musicians Union President Dies

WASHINGTON (AP) _ J. Martin ``Marty″ Emerson, a former president of the American Federation of Musicians, died Wednesday after a heart attack. He was 85.

The heart attack occurred while Emerson, a resident of Vienna, Va., was on vacation. He died in a Martinsville, W.Va., hospital.

Emerson was president of the musicians union from 1987 to 1991 after serving for 10 years as its secretary. He began his labor career in 1950 as secretary of a local musicians union in Washington.

Emerson’s passion for music started at age 12, when he joined the Washington Boys Independent Band as a trombone player. As a musician, he played on tour with several big-name band leaders, including Tommy Dorsey, Gene Krupa and Paul Tremaine.

Survivors include his wife, a son and a daughter.
