Reds release former Herd star Shackelford

The Cincinnati Reds released former Marshall University pitcher Kevin Shackelford Tuesday and revealed the right-handed reliever needs elbow surgery.

Shackelford, who could be re-signed to a minor league contract as the team did with injured pitcher Matt Magill in June of 2015, was let go to make room on the roster for starting pitcher Anthony DeSclafani, who was activated from the 60-day disabled list. The Reds also option reliever Jackson Stephens to the minors.

Shackelford had pitched in five games this season, going 0-1 with a 7.88 earned run average. In eight innings, Shackelford had allowed 13 hits, struck out seven and walked four.
