Firefighters recall decades at Ludington station
Dec. 11 marked the 41st anniversary of the volunteer Ludington Fire Department operating at its current fire station at 109 S. Robert St. Four of the firefighters who still serve at the department remember moving into that building — they helped renovate it from a pair of warehouses into a functional fire station.
“It served us well all these years,” said Fire Chief Jerry Funk, who has worked at the department for 49 years.
Around the last week of January, the construction of the new, 10,000-square-foot fire station on East Tinkham Avenue, behind the Lakeshore Resource Network, is expected to be completed. Then the department will move into the new building, which will be the first Ludington facility originally built to be a fire station, Funk said.
