17-Day Arts Festival Opens Friday
PITTSBURGH (AP) _ The annual Three Rivers Arts Festival opens Friday for 17 days of arts, crafts, music, dance, poetry, and food in downtown Pittsburgh.
This year’s festival focuses on experimental art, music and dance, with a large sculpture exhibition in Point State Park and a series of interdisciplinary peformances.
The festival, sponsored by The Carnegie Museum of Art, has scaled down free presentations in part because this year it must pay 40 percent of the cost of police and other services.
On schedule in the park, however, are guitarist John Lee Hooker, folk singer Laura Nyro, the Neville Brothers, Buckwheat Zydeco and Cabo Frio.
John Edgar Wideman, author of several books about his native Pittsburgh, will launch the Three Rivers Literature Festival on Sunday with readings from his works.
