EXCHANGE-ALASKA EARTHQUAKE-HIGHWAY ROCKS

ANCHORAGE, Alaska _ The big earthquake that struck Southcentral Alaska on Nov. 30 dislodged several dump trucks’ worth of rocks and debris from the steep rock walls that line the Seward Highway along Turnagain Arm. The event underscored a problem well-known to state officials: This stretch of highway is particularly prone to falling rock. The shaking caused a boulder to crash into a semi truck at Mile 111, damaging the truck but sparing the driver. By Devin Kelly, Anchorage Daily News.

EXCHANGE-ALASKA FORESTER

JUNEAU, Alaska _ Dave Schmid is ready to move out of the Juneau Hotel. For eight months, Schmid has been the acting regional forester for the Alaska Region of the U.S. National Forest Service. Though he’s been treating it like a long-term job, it wasn’t officially permanent until this November. A Nov. 30 press release announced that he was taking over the post full-time.
