BAGHDAD (AP) — Authorities in Iraq say a car bomb targeting a street full of shoppers in the capital, Baghdad, has killed six people and wounded 16 others.

Police officials say that the Friday night blast took place in the capital's eastern Mashtal neighborhood.

Health officials confirmed the casualty figures. All officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to release the information to reporters.

Violence has escalated sharply since late April following a deadly crackdown by security forces on a camp for Sunni protesters in the northern town of Hawija.

Friday's attack came after a wave of car bomb and suicide bomb blasts Thursday that left at least 61 people dead across the country.
