Husband Arrested in Bludgeoning

April 23, 1999

NEW YORK (AP) _ An investment manager was in critical condition Friday with a fractured skull after her husband allegedly bludgeoned her with a barbell while she slept.

Police said Aftab Islam may have become enraged after Theresa Havell asked him for a divorce. Islam, 58, was ordered held without bail on charges including attempted murder and assault.

Havell, 52, made a name for herself in investment circles while working for Neuberger Berman Management Inc., where she oversaw a $12 billion portfolio. She left there in 1996 and founded Havell Capital Management. She also had appeared as an occasional guest on CNN’s ``Your Money″ show about personal finances.

Police were called to the couple’s four-story townhouse on Manhattan’s Upper East Side before dawn Thursday after receiving several calls, including one from the couple’s teen-age daughter.

They found Havell beaten around the head and face with a barbell, Detective Walter Burnes said.

The victim’s skull was fractured and she needed more than 100 stitches to close head wounds. She also had several teeth knocked out.
