Stamford Dollars for Scholars introduces “Corporate Challenge Series”

January 28, 2019

STAMFORD — David McCall, vice president of The Stamford Dollars for Scholars (SD4S) Board of Directors announced the organization’s 2019 strategy with a roster of a wide variety of fundraising events to “...engender friendly competition between corporations within Fairfield County, Connecticut and to raise awareness and funds to provide scholarships for Stamford graduating seniors, all while having fun.”

The SD4S Corporate Challenge Series consists of individually sponsored competitive sports activity-based events throughout the year. The first annual “Bowling for a Cause,” brings together global, national, and local companies competing for the title. The event will be hosted at RPM Raceway Feb. 6. Fourteeen teams have singed up to play including UBS, FactSet, Interactive Brokers, Webster Bank, Speed Printing & Graphics, Lalor Attorneys, UBreakIFix, CGS Health, BetaRocks Climbing Gym, BIC Corporation, and WB Mason. The following event sponsors have also been confirmed: Webster Bank, Speed Printing & Graphics, Lalor Attorneys and The Tarzia Group

During the Summer Months, Stamford Dollars For Scholars has experienced success with soccer matches. The majority of the funds raised are through the individual contributions of the competitors who “pay to play.” Corporate matching is strongly encouraged. The Community Affairs departments of both Nestle Waters and UBS have been integral in corporate matching support.

The inspiration for the SD4S Corporate Challenge Series began in 2013 as a friendly soccer game between UBS and Nestle Waters. Since 2013, the soccer challenge has grown to an annual tournament between 4 local companies beginning with Point72 in 2016, and Interactive Brokers in 2018. Total proceeds from the events to date exceed $15,000 with 3 sponsored scholarships (each scholarship is $5,000) to be awarded in June 2019 to Stamford High School Seniors selected by the SD4S Awards Committee. David McCall states, the new initiative serves “as a more formal step forward from the various soccer scrimmages they had been playing around Stamford ”.

McCall notes that other potential events in the SD4S Corporate Challenge Series include a rock/call climbing challenge, and a Go-Kart competition. SD4S is open to feedback and suggestions for future events from participants and sponsors. McCall also aims for the SD4S Corporate Challenge Series to become nationally recognized within the Scholarship America Organization as potential model for other chapters.
