Hungary To Commemorate 1956 Revolt

October 5, 1989

BUDAPEST, Hungary (AP) _ Hungary will propose that Oct. 23 be commemorated annually, memorializing the outbreak of the 1956 anti-Stalinist revolution that was crushed by Soviet tanks, government spokesman Zsolt Bajnok said Wednesday.

″The government’s intention is to have Oct. 23 declared a day of national remembrance, a day to further national reconciliation,″ Bajnok told reporters. Hungary’s reform-minded communist leadership declared in February that the uprising was a legitimate popular uprising, not a fascist-inspired counter-revolution, as proclaimed for 33 years.
