Past American Legion commander to speak at Cal U

October 5, 2018

Past American Legion Commander Denise Rohan

A past national commander of the American Legion will be the keynote speaker at California University of Pennsylvania’s ‘Families First’ event at 6 p.m. Friday at the university’s Convocation Center to honor veterans and raise money for a memorial scholarship.

Denise Rohan, who was elected national commander of the American Legion in August 2017, will participate in the Families First event, said Robert L Prah Jr., director of Cal U’s office of Military & Veterans Affairs. Rohan is the first woman to serve as the American Legion’s national commander.

The Families First event will benefit the Commander Kerrie Gill Sr. Memorial Family Scholarship, which has been established for military families in the name of Gill, a Korean War veteran who died in 2015.

Gill, a Cal U alum and former university employee, served three terms as post commander in California, Pa., and was commander of the Pennsylvania Department of the American Legion, which included more than 800 posts.

Cal U President Geraldine M. Jones and Larry Maggi, a Marine Corps veteran and Cal U trustee, are the official hosts for Families First. James Vollrath, the new commander of the Pennsylvania American Legion plan, is expected to participate.

Guests can visit the “We Can Do It! WWII,” a free exhibition of World War II memorabilia on display in Manderino Library.
