Former Motorola chairman and CEO dies
SCHAUMBURG, Ill. (AP) _ William J. Weisz, former chairman and chief executive of Motorola Inc., has died at the age of 70.
Weisz apparently suffered a heart attack and died at his home in the Phoenix area on Wednesday, according to a statement from Motorola.
Weisz, who lived most of his life in the Chicago area, became president of Motorola in 1970 at the age of 43.
Over the next 20 years, he managed Motorola’s transformation from a small consumer electronics company to a global leader in high-technology communications, semiconductors and electronics.
He became chief executive in 1986 and was elected chairman of the board in 1993. He retired this year.
Survivors include his wife Barbara, three children and four grandchildren.
