Med Student Charged With Murder
BOSTON (AP) _ A medical student who had been ordered to pay $100,000 to a man he injured during an argument in 1997 was charged Wednesday with shooting the man and killing the man’s roommate.
Daniel Mason, 35, of Malden, pleaded innocent to charges of murder and armed assault with intent to murder. Police arrested him Monday at Boston Medical Center, where he took classes. He is being held without bail.
Mason could not be contacted in jail for comment, and whether he had a lawyer could not immediately be determined. A hearing was scheduled for next month, but a specific date was not set.
Mason allegedly shot Gene Yazgur, 28, and Michael Lenz, 28, at their apartment Friday morning. Lenz died, and Yazgur remains hospitalized in critical condition.
In September 1997, Mason used a knife to slice off part of Yazgur’s ear because he was angered by Yazgur’s truck blocking his car. Mason was convicted of assault, and placed on probation.
After Yazgur filed a civil lawsuit, a judge awarded him $116,400, plus $1,645 in interest. Mason was notified March 1 that a sheriff had been authorized to begin collecting the settlement.
The next morning, Mason allegedly went to Yazgur’s apartment at 5:30 a.m., shot Lenz, then shot Yazgur once in each leg, several times in the chest and between the eyes. Yazgur’s dog was also shot and killed.
