Julio Gonzalez Wins IBA Title
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) _ Julio Gonzalez overcame three knockdowns to outpoint Julian Letterlough for the IBA continental cruiserweight title Friday night.
Gonzalez (26-0, 16 knockouts) was knocked down three times, including once with about a minute left in round 10, but Letterlough (16-1-1) couldn’t finish him off.
``He dazed me, I went down. I stayed there to get my head straight, and I got up,″ Gonzalez said.
Gonzalez knocked down Letterlough 30 seconds into the fight, but only once more after that in the 12-round bout.
``I thought this fight was going to be hard,″ Gonzalez said.
Earlier, two-time Ohio Ms. Basketball Vonda Ward remained unbeaten with a technical knockout of Kisha Snow.
Ward (11-0, 11 KOs) battered Snow (6-1) in the third round, then finished her off 1:05 into the fourth and final round of their heavyweight fight.
The 6-foot-6, 195-pound Ward was honored as Ohio’s top high school girls’ basketball player in 1990 and 1991 while at Garfield Heights Trinity. She played college basketball at Tennessee.
Snow, 5-7 and 225 pounds, was the top-ranked contender for the vacant International Female Boxing Association heavyweight title.
