Inmate slain at Staton prison; fellow inmate charged
ELMORE, Ala. (AP) — Another inmate has been killed inside an Alabama prison.
A statement from the Department of Corrections says officers responding to an incident at Staton prison in Elmore found 52-year-old Joseph Clark Holloway with multiple stab wounds Wednesday morning.
The man died at a hospital. The agency says Holloway was serving a 40-year sentence for a 1993 robbery conviction in Chambers County.
The prison statement says a 26-year-old inmate, Demarcus Lashawn Baker, is being charged with murder in the killing. He is serving a 20-year term for robbery in Baldwin County.
Court records aren’t available to show whether Baker has an attorney representing him currently.
The Justice Department issued a report in March condemning Alabama prisons for excessive violence, inmate deaths and a critical staffing shortage.
