Community to celebrate Anthony’s 511 makeover

May 7, 2019

Wednesday is not another day for Anthony’s 511.

When the large tarp concealing the makeover falls at 8:30 Wednesday morning, residents and passersby will see a new Anthony’s 511, 511 E. Main St., which was the winner of the state’s Main Street Makeover contest.

Rep. John Jagler, R-Watertown, will lead community officials and dignitaries through a countdown before the official unveiling of the remodeled business happens.

During the celebration a city block will be closed for the dedication.

Tours of the remodeled barbershop will take place after the ceremony.

In January, Anthony’s 511 was the winner in the Wisconsin Economic Development Corp.’s Main Street Makeover Contest, beating out 20 other businesses statewide. For winning, owner Anthony Chentis received up to $10,000 in matching funds to give his business a face-lift both inside and out.

Since the award was announced, an additional $15,000 has been contributed by the community in support of the project.

The improvements were made during a 48-hour makeover event last month.

“Anthony’s 511 is more than just a barber shop -- it’s a gathering place for many in the community,” said Melissa Lampe, executive director of the Watertown Main Street Program, explaining the reason the shop was nominated. “Since opening more than a decade ago, Chentis has worked diligently to create a dedicated customer base while also making time to give back to the community through charitable events such as the STAR BBQ Competition. This award will help Chentis take his business to the next level and shine a very positive light on the many revitalization efforts taking place in our community.”

“This recognition validates that Anthony’s hard work and vision have had a positive effect on the Main Street district and will continue to do so,” Lampe added. “We can’t wait to see how the improvements to this key property will drive further investment in the community.”

Lampe’s comments were made in January when Anthony’s 511 was chosen for the prestigious award.
