Wyoming regulators: Byproduct spill had minimal impact

May 23, 2019

LARAMIE, Wyo. (AP) — Wyoming environmental regulators say the spill earlier this month of a water byproduct from oil and gas development had a minimal effect on the environment.

The Laramie Boomerang reported Thursday that a semitrailer carrying barrels of produced water crashed on state Highway 230 in southeastern Wyoming on May 1.

State Department of Environmental Quality Public Information Supervisor Keith Guille says officials don’t know how much produced water reached a nearby creek.

Guille says the byproduct could contain chemicals, but it’s mostly just water.

Companies are required to store produced water or to treat it before releasing. The state requires tests and permits before the byproduct can be discharged.
