Family Seeks Chance to Speak with Imprisoned Accused Spy With AM-Spy Ring, Bjt

ALLIANCE, Ohio (AP) _ Clyde Lee Conrad, a former Army sergeant who marked his 41st birthday Saturday in a West German prison after his arrest on espionage charges, has not been allowed to speak to his parents, the family said.

″We love him, and we are quite certain he needs moral support,″ Conrad’s father, Harry Conrad told The Alliance Review. ″There’s no way we can take back what has happened, but his mom and dad and family love him and he has our prayers.″

Clyde Conrad, who allegedly led a spy ring that provided U.S. and NATO military secrets to the Soviets, faces espionage charges carrying a maximum 10-year sentence.

The Conrads, in an interview published Saturday afternoon, said they have not been allowed to speak with their son since his arrest Tuesday in Frankfurt, West Germany.

Calls by The Associated Press to the family’s home in Alliance went unanswered Saturday.

The newspaper said the Conrads would ask U.S. Rep. Ralph Regula to help them obtain permission from the West German government to talk to their son.

No request for help had been made Saturday and Regula, R-Ohio, planned to be away from his home near Canton until Tuesday, the congressman’s son, David Regula, said.

Conrad grew up in Sebring, a town of about 5,000 in a rural area 55 miles southeast of Cleveland. He entered the Army after his high school graduation in 1965, and his father and mother, Anna Conrad, and his sister, Karen Henschen, moved to Alliance, four miles west of Sebring. A brother, Darell Robert Conrad, lives in Boca Raton, Fla.

″I always thought I knew my son,″ Harry Conrad said. ″We were pretty tightly wrapped. If I had had this knowledge before it would have killed me. It’s about to kill me now.″

Relatives and acquaintances said Conrad seldom returned home from Germany.

″He always distanced himself from us,″ Ms. Henschen said. ″He didn’t see big opportunities in Sebring. Joining the military was a way for him to travel.″

″He is a stranger we’re talking about. He’s someone I really don’t know, even though we share same parents,″ she said.
