UNIONDALE, N.Y. (AP) _ Brent Sutter scored with 1:40 remaining in the third period Thursday night to give the New York Islanders a 5-5 NHL exhibition tie with the New York Rangers.

The Rangers had a four-goal third period against Islander rookie goalie Roy Gunn, who had replaced Kelly Hrudey at the start of the third period. The Islanders led 3-1 after two periods.

In the third period the Rangers got goals from Tomas Sandstrom, Kelly Kisio and rookies Chris Jensen and Glenn Johannsen.

The teams traded first period goals as Dave Gagner scored for the Rangers and Brad Lauer for the Islanders.

The Islanders scored two power-play goals in the second period by Stu Burnie and Greg Gilbert.

John Vanbiesbrouk faced all 36 New York Islander shots, despite being relieved for three minutes in the third period.
