Johnson, Lagat in L.A. Track Meet
LOS ANGELES (AP) _ Pole vaulter Lawrence Johnson and miler Bernard Lagat headline the field for the Los Angeles Invitational indoor track meet.
Charles Austin, who holds the Olympic record in the high jump, and Angela Williams, the only female winner of the NCAA 100-meter title three straight years, are also expected to compete Saturday night at the Los Angeles Sports Arena.
Johnson, the 2001 world indoor champion and a silver medalist at the Sydney Olympics, will compete against Russ Buller, Curt Hanna and Jim Davis, among others. All have cleared 19 feet.
Lagat, who won the bronze medal in Sydney, will face Jason Pyrah, Clyde Colennso, Jonathan Riley and Donald Sage in the mile.
Pyrah was the only U.S. finalist in the 1,500 meters at the 2000 Summer Games.
Austin, the 1996 Atlanta Games high jump champion with an Olympic record of 7-10, will compete against Nathan Leeper, who has a personal best of 7-8 1/2, and Shane Levy, who has cleared 7-7 1/4.
Jon Drummond, who ran leadoff for the U.S. gold medal-winning 400-meter relay team at the Olympics, tops the entries in the 50-meter dash.
