Hartsville woman dies in house fire

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – A Hartsville woman died Friday in a house fire.

Darlington County Coroner J. Todd Hardee responded to 1115 Clyde School Road at approximately noon Friday. Gerry Lynn Byrd, 54, of Hartsville, was pronounced dead at the scene by the coroner.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, as is standard in all structure fires. The investigation is being conducted by Darlington County Coroner’s Office, the Darlington County Fire District, the Darlington County Sheriff’s Office and SLED’s Arson Division.

An autopsy will be conducted Saturday.

The Darlington County Fire District responded to the structure fire after a call was received shortly after 11:30 a.m. Units from three stations responded. The Hartsville Fire Department responded through mutual aid to assist.

According to Chief Ricky Flowers, first arriving units reported heavy smoke showing from the home. Crews were able to extinguish the fire shortly after arrival. Upon entry on the back side of the home, a victim was located but was already deceased.
