Wilber splits weekend games at state
ALBION -- The Wilber Legion Seniors won their first game of the Class C State Tournament, but lost in the second round.
In the first round, Wilber defeated host team Albion 8-3.
They rocketed out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Tanner sand singled, Cooper Bates walked and both scored on Dillon Rieschick’s three-run home run.
Albion scored a run in the second inning to make it 3-1, but Wilber got that run back in the third inning. Bates led off with a double and a balk put him at third with one out. Josh Kalkwarf’s sacrifice fly scored him, making it 4-1.
Wilber added three runs in the fourth inning. Brendon Hooper and Preston Lee walked to lead off and Tad Moldenhauer sacrificed them to second and third. Tanner Sand’s RBI single made it 5-1.
Bates was hit by a pitch to load the bases and Rieschick then came through with an RBI single. Josh Kalkwarf’s ground out scored another run to make it 7-1.
Albion made things interesting with two runs in the fifth inning to make it 7-3, but Wilber would tack on one more insurance run in the seventh to make it 8-3.
Grant Boysen, Coltin Rezabek and Brendon Hooper all walked to load the bases. Lee’s sacrifice fly made it 8-3, but Wilber would be unable to get any more runs out of the rally.
It wouldn’t matter, though, as their pitching would shut Albion down in the bottom of the seventh. Kalkwarf pitched the first three innings, giving up one earned run on four hits while striking out four. Sand pitched 3.2 innings, giving up two runs (none earned) on two hits while striking out five.
Rieschick led the way offensively with a home run, a single and four RBI’s. Sand had two singles, Bates had a double and Boysen and Moldenhauer had a single each.
Wilber picked up the win despite committing four defensive errors in the game.
In their second round game, Wilber lost to Pender 7-6. Wilber led 6-3 going into the bottom of the seventh inning, but Pender rallied for four runs to pick up the walk-off win.
Wilber was out-hit 13-5 in the game. Moldenhauer had a double, a single, two RBI’s and a run scored. Sand, Rieschick and Rezabek had a single each.
Cooper Bates, EJ Fillipi, Preston Lee and Tyler Hooper combined to pitch in the game for Wilber.
Wilber dropped to an elimination game against Gordon Rushville Monday night. For those results, see Wednesday’s Daily Sun.
With a win in that game, Wilber would play at 8 p.m. on Tuesday. A loss would end their tournament and season.
