“The Old Man & the Gun”: In his final performance, so he says, Robert Redford plays a bank robber on a late-career spree. In spite of the bittersweet circumstance of Redford’s retirement and the stark, Hemingwayesque title, the movie, critics agreed, is an old-fashioned charmer.

“Night School”: It’s easy to imagine a decent comedy with Tiffany Haddish as a GED teacher motivating a classroom full of eccentric characters in need of a second chance. Haddish, not Kevin Hart, would be the star of that movie, though, not a supporting character, and it wouldn’t begin with Hart rocketing through the night sky after blowing up the barbecue store where he works.

“State Like Sleep”: “Fantastic Beasts” star Katherine Waterston plays the widow of a famous European actor who pokes around some dark places to determine the truth behind her husband’s death. When “State Like Sleep” premiered at the 2018 Tribeca Film Festival, Variety called it a “consistently surprising film.” Michael Shannon co-stars.
