Gore fuels Herd’s comeback win in overtime at UTSA

February 3, 2019

SAN ANTONIO — On Saturday afternoon, Marshall women’s basketball team never led their contest at UTSA in regulation.

However, they did lead when it mattered most — at the end of the game.

The Herd got several key plays down the stretch to force an overtime session and Shayna Gore’s 31 points propelled Marshall in a 79-72 win over the Roadrunners at the Convocation Center in San Antonio.

Marshall (13-9, 7-2 C-USA) did not lead until Gore scored on a layup with 3:08 left in overtime. However, her biggest play came two possessions later.

With the game tied at 72, Gore collected her own miss and later converted a 3-point play after finishing at the basket while being fouled by UTSA’s Tija Hawkins.

Not only did the play give Marshall a 75-72 lead, but it was also the fifth foul on Hawkins, who exited the game with 26 points and 10 rebounds.

With Hawkins out, the Roadrunners were unable to find their offense and Gore secured a steal on the ensuing possession before the Herd connected on four free throws to end the game and complete their second consecutive road sweep in Conference USA action.

Marshall scrambled late in the game to force the extra session with big plays coming from the team’s seniors.

The Herd trailed by four with under a minute left, but Khadaijia Brooks hit a jumper with four seconds left to knot the game at 66. The jumper came following a pair of free throws from UTSA’s Marie Benson that came after Gore’s 3-pointer knotted the game for the first time since tip-off.

For the second straight game, Marshall found itself with an 11-point halftime deficit as the Roadrunners went to the locker room leading 30-19. In the first half, Marshall was just 8 of 32 from the floor.

However, the Herd caught fire in the second half and OT, scoring 60 points in 25 minutes to earn the comeback win.

In the fourth quarter and overtime, Marshall was a combined 15 of 21 from the floor.

After a 1-of-7 start, Taylor Porter connected on her last six shots from the floor and finished with 19 points to complement Gore in the win. Clemons and Kristen Mayo each added seven points while Brooks corralled 13 rebounds in the win.

In addition to Hawkins, UTSA (6-15, 1-8 C-USA) got a solid all-around effort from Benson, who finished with 16 points, 16 rebounds and five assists. Karrington Donald also had 12 points and five assists in the loss.
