Food Retailer Acquires Bruno’s
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) _ International food retailer Ahold announced Tuesday it has completed the acquisition of Birmingham-based Bruno’s supermarkets.
Plans for Ahold to acquire Bruno’s for about $500 million were announced Sept. 4.
The company will continue to operate its stores under the names Bruno’s, Food World, FoodMax and Food Fair, said Bruno’s President James Demme. Local store management and employees will not be affected.
Ahold operates about 9,000 stores in 28 countries _ 1,600 in the U.S. Those stores include Mauldin, S.C.-based BI-LO; Landover, Md.-based Giant Food; Giant Food Stores in Carlisle, Pa.; Stop & Shop in Quincy, Mass. and Tops Markets in Williamsville, N.Y.
Bruno’s operates 170 stores in Alabama and three other states.
