Wilkes-Barre Attorney Reprimanded

December 7, 2018

HARRISBURG

A Wilkes-Barre attorney is being publicly reprimanded for making disparaging statements about a federal judge in a court filing.

William E. Vinsko Jr. will appear for the reprimand Jan. 7 in Philadelphia after the disciplinary board of the state Supreme Court found he violated rules of professional conduct by making “reckless aspersions” against U.S. District Judge Robert D. Mariani.

According to a petition filed in the case, Vinsko represented Swinka Realty Investments LLC in a lawsuit alleging the Lackawanna County Tax Claim Bureau violated its civil rights related to an upset tax sale of a property in Dickson City.

When Mariani ruled in favor of the county, Vinsko filed an appeal to the U.S. Third Circuit Court of Appeals in which he wrote that Mariani “smugly contradicted” himself, had “questionable reasoning” and went “to great lengths to deprive Swinka of its rights,” according to the petition.

According to the filing, Vinsko was remorseful about the statements and has apologized.
